Discover more about Maroon Bells Scenic Area

The Maroon Bells Scenic Area, nestled in the White River National Forest near Aspen, Colorado, presents one of North America's most breathtaking alpine vistas. The area is defined by the towering Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, two fourteeners (peaks exceeding 14,000 feet) whose distinctive maroon hue and bell-like forms reflect dramatically in the still waters of Maroon Lake. Formed over millions of years, the Maroon Bells owe their unique color and composition to the mudstone from which they are made. This mudstone, a collection of ancient sediments, gives the mountains their signature red hue and also makes them notoriously challenging for climbers. The area was historically part of the Ute Tribe's territory. The silver boom in Aspen during the late 19th century brought miners to the region, but it wasn't until the mid-20th century, with the rise of skiing and tourism in Aspen, that the Maroon Bells gained widespread popularity. Today, the Maroon Bells Scenic Area offers a variety of recreational activities. Hiking trails range from easy strolls around Maroon Lake to more strenuous treks into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The area is particularly stunning in the fall when the aspen trees turn golden, creating a vibrant contrast against the maroon peaks and the clear blue sky. Due to its popularity, access to the Maroon Bells is managed through a reservation system to protect the fragile alpine environment. Visitors can access the area by shuttle, bike, or, with a reservation, by car during certain hours.
