Discover more about Ben Tyler Trailhead

The Ben Tyler Trailhead is a popular starting point for exploring the Lost Creek Wilderness. The trail immediately ascends via a series of switchbacks. After the switchbacks, the trail continues to climb, crossing Ben Tyler Creek. The trail then winds through diverse landscapes, including aspen groves, lodgepole pine forests, and alpine meadows. The trail is named after Ben Tyler, who operated a lumber mill in the area during the gold rush days. In 1903, a fire swept through the gulch, resulting in the expansive aspen groves seen today. The trail offers stunning views, especially during the fall when the aspen groves display vibrant colors. From the high point, hikers can enjoy panoramic views to the north and south. The trail eventually descends into the Rock Creek drainage, passing the remains of an old lumber camp. The Ben Tyler Trail connects to the Craig Park Trail and the Colorado Trail, offering options for longer backpacking trips. A free, self-issuing permit is required upon entering the Lost Creek Wilderness.
