Discover more about Saint Catherine's Chapel on the Rock

Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel, commonly known as the Chapel on the Rock, is a captivating landmark nestled in Allenspark, Colorado. This functioning Catholic chapel, officially named Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel, sits on the grounds of the Saint Malo Retreat, Conference, and Spiritual Center of the Catholic Archdiocese of Denver. In 1916, Monsignor Joseph Bosetti, inspired by the biblical phrase 'upon this rock I will build my church,' envisioned a church atop the prominent rock formation. Construction was delayed due to funding and challenges with the Colorado Highway Department, which wanted to use the rock for road base. Eventually, land was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Malo, and Denver architect Jacques Benedict designed the chapel. The chapel was completed in 1936, using native stone from the surrounding area. The chapel has a rich history, with Pope John Paul II having prayed there in 1993 during his visit to Denver for World Youth Day. The chapel has withstood natural disasters, including a fire in 2011 and a flood in 2013. Visitors can explore the chapel's grounds, admire the architecture, and take in the views. Inside, the chapel features statues from Italy and stained glass from Germany. The chapel is open to the public and continues to hold religious services. It's a popular destination for tourists and those seeking a spiritual experience in a picturesque setting.
