Discover more about Beacon Mountain

Beacon Mountain, also known locally as Mount Beacon, stands as the highest peak in the Hudson Highlands, rising south of the city of Beacon in New York. Its two summits dominate the skyline, offering breathtaking views of the Hudson River, the Catskill Mountains, and even the New York City skyline on a clear day. Named for the signal fires lit during the Revolutionary War to warn of British troop movements, Beacon Mountain has a rich history beyond its strategic importance. In the early 20th century, it became a popular tourist destination, accessible via the Mount Beacon Incline Railway, once the steepest passenger funicular in the world. Visitors flocked to the summit to enjoy the Beaconcrest Hotel and Casino, a dance hall, and sweeping views of the Hudson Valley. Today, hikers can explore the remnants of this vibrant past, including the ruins of the incline railway and the foundations of the hotel and casino. The restored fire tower on the southern summit provides even more spectacular views. The mountain also boasts a diverse ecosystem, with trails winding through forests and past the Beacon Reservoir, the city's main water source. For those seeking a challenging hike with a rewarding view and a touch of history, Beacon Mountain is a must-visit destination.
