Discover more about Mount Beacon Rock Scramble

Breakneck Ridge, straddling the boundary between Dutchess and Putnam counties, is a mountain famed for its challenging hiking trails and stunning vistas of the Hudson River. The mountain's rocky cliffs, a result of past quarrying, create a distinctive landscape visible from afar. Together with Storm King Mountain, Breakneck Ridge forms Wey-Gat, or Wind Gate, marking the northern gateway to the Hudson Highlands. Located within Hudson Highlands State Park, Breakneck Ridge has become a popular destination for hikers, drawing crowds especially on weekends. The most common route involves a steep, rocky climb up the mountain's west face, beginning near a tunnel on Route 9D. This ascent requires hikers to use both hands and feet to navigate the challenging terrain. Several trails offer varying loop options, including the short loop (1.5 miles), the long loop (3.7 miles), and routes leading to Cold Spring. The Ninham Trail, opened in 2021, provides an alternative, less steep route with over 500 stone steps, offering a safer descent option. Currently, the Breakneck Ridge Trail is closed for construction as of April 21, 2025, with an expected reopening in 2027. This closure is part of the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail project, which aims to improve trail safety and access.
