Located at 1681 Broadway, near 53rd Street, the Broadway Theatre stands as a significant landmark in New York City's Theater District. Designed by Eugene De Rosa, it opened in 1924 as B.S. Moss's Colony Theatre, a movie palace and vaudeville house. In its early years, it premiered Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie in 1928, introducing Mickey Mouse to American audiences.
The theater transitioned to a legitimate house in 1930 and was renamed the Broadway Theatre. Throughout the 1930s, it alternated between movies and live performances until the Shubert family acquired it in 1939. The Shuberts renovated the theater in 1939, 1956, and 1986, ensuring it remained a premier venue for large-scale musical productions.
The Broadway Theatre has hosted many long-running and notable productions, including Rodgers and Hart's Too Many Girls, Funny Girl, Cabaret, and Les Misérables. Its large stage and seating capacity of approximately 1,763 seats make it a favorite for major musicals.
