Located in Avarua, the Cook Islands Library & Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the Cook Islands. Founded in 1963 and opened in 1964, the Library and Museum Society was created to advance science, education, and culture by maintaining a public library and museum. The building itself was designed by architect Ken Mills. The museum features an array of South Pacific and Cook Islands artifacts, including traditional weaving, carving, ceremonial items, cooking utensils and weaponry. Exhibits also include historical art, photographs, shells and metal objects. The library houses a collection of rare books on the Pacific, some of which have been donated over the years. Visitors can explore maritime exhibits, including vaka (canoes) and a historic anchor. The library also offers visitor memberships for borrowing materials. The museum is open on select days, offering an enriching experience for those looking to immerse themselves in local culture.
