Discover more about Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve is a remarkable natural sanctuary located high in the Tilarán Mountains of Costa Rica. Established in 1972 through the collaboration of scientists and the local Quaker community, the preserve protects a vital and fragile ecosystem: the tropical cloud forest. These forests, defined by their persistent, low-level cloud cover, represent only a tiny fraction of the world's forests and are among the most threatened. At elevations ranging from 1,250 to 1,830 meters (4,101 to 6,004 feet), the Monteverde Cloud Forest is perpetually shrouded in mist, creating a unique environment that supports an astounding array of life. The reserve is home to an exceptional concentration of biodiversity, including a vast number of plant, bird, mammal, reptile, amphibian, and insect species. The preserve is home to over 420 species of orchids and 200 species of ferns. Lucky visitors may spot jaguars, pumas, monkeys, and the red-eyed tree frogs. Birdwatchers come from afar hoping to glimpse the resplendent quetzal, a bird of stunning beauty, or the three-wattled bellbird. The preserve offers visitors a network of well-maintained trails, allowing exploration of this unique ecosystem. Trails like Sendero Bosque Nuboso lead to viewpoints where you can observe the continental divide. Visitors can hike independently or join guided tours led by experienced naturalists. These tours provide valuable insights into the cloud forest's flora, fauna, and ecology, increasing the chances of spotting wildlife.
