The Children's Eternal Rainforest (CER), known locally as Bosque Eterno de los Niños (BEN), stands as a testament to global collaboration in conservation. Spanning approximately 22,500 hectares (55,600 acres), this vast private reserve is the largest in Costa Rica, encompassing diverse habitats across three provinces. The Monteverde Conservation League (MCL), a non-profit organization founded in 1986, manages the Children's Eternal Rainforest. The MCL's mission is to preserve, conserve, and rehabilitate tropical ecosystems and their biodiversity. The forest's origins trace back to Swedish schoolchildren who raised funds to protect the rainforest, inspiring a global movement. Children from over 40 countries contributed to purchasing and safeguarding this invaluable natural treasure. The Children's Eternal Rainforest is home to an astounding array of flora and fauna. It protects approximately 2% of the world's orchids, 3% of the world's butterflies, and almost 5% of the world's birds. Visitors can explore four distinct locations within the reserve: Bajo del Tigre, San Gerardo Station, Pocosol Station, and Finca Steller. Each offers unique hiking trails and opportunities to witness the region's incredible biodiversity. Bajo del Tigre is particularly suited for families, featuring an information center and children's activity center. San Gerardo and Pocosol Stations provide lodging and meals for a more immersive experience. The MCL actively promotes environmental education, reforestation, sustainable development, and scientific research within the Children's Eternal Rainforest.
