Discover more about Oltar Domovine

Oltar Domovine (Altar of the Homeland) is a memorial monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the Croatian Homeland War. Designed by sculptor Kuzma Kovačić, it was inaugurated on Statehood Day, May 30, 1994, by President Franjo Tuđman. The monument is located at Medvedgrad, a medieval fortress on Medvednica Mountain overlooking Zagreb. The memorial features stone blocks from each Croatian county and six blue glass panels shaped like Croatia's coat of arms. Croatian motifs from the time of Prince Branimir, a large cross, and verses from the Croatian anthem are carved into the stone blocks. An eternal flame burns at the center, symbolizing the nation's enduring gratitude. Visitors can reflect on Croatian history while enjoying panoramic views of Zagreb. The site is particularly significant on national holidays and remembrance days when ceremonies honor the nation's heroes.
