Discover more about Regional Museum Mikulov

The Regional Museum Mikulov, situated within the striking Mikulov Chateau, offers an immersive exploration of South Moravia's captivating past. The chateau itself, perched atop a hill overlooking the town, has been a dominant feature of Mikulov for centuries, originally a medieval castle founded by King Otakar Přemysl I. The museum's diverse exhibits guide visitors through different eras, beginning with the region's ancient history. One notable exhibit explores the Roman and Germanic presence in the area, displaying archaeological finds from excavations near Mušov, including artifacts from a Germanic prince's tomb. This exhibit also features a reconstruction of a Roman hypocaust, or underfloor heating system. Another significant portion of the museum is dedicated to the Dietrichstein family, who owned the Mikulov estate from 1575 to 1945. The Dietrichstein Gallery showcases portraits and items related to the family's history, highlighting their influence on the region's social, political, and economic development. The museum also features exhibits on the history of Mikulov Chateau, including its transformation into a Renaissance residence under Cardinal Franz Dietrichstein. Given the region's prominent wine-making traditions, the museum dedicates significant space to viticulture. Exhibits cover the history of wine cultivation in Moravia, from traditional methods to modern techniques. A highlight is the Chateau Cellar, home to a giant wine cask dating back to 1643, one of the largest in Europe. Other exhibits include the Chateau Library, which has retained its 18th-century character and houses a collection of over 11,000 books. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience for visitors.
