Getting There

  • Car

    From Kvilda, head north on Route 169 towards Horská Kvilda. After approximately 2 km, you'll see a parking area on the left side of the road. The parking lot is the starting point for the trail to Jezerní slať. Parking fees apply. Be aware that parking is limited.

  • Public Transport

    Take a bus from Prachatice to Kvilda. From Kvilda, you can take a local bus towards Horská Kvilda and get off at the Jezerní slať stop ('Kvilda, park. u Jezerní Slatě'). From the bus stop, walk a short distance (350m) south towards the parking lot and the start of the trail. Bus schedules vary, so check in advance.

  • Walking

    From Kvilda, follow the Route 169 north towards Horská Kvilda. After approximately 2 km, you will reach the parking area on the left, marking the start of the Jezerní slať trail. The walk from Kvilda to Jezerní Slat is about 2 kilometers and should take around 30 minutes.

The Vyhlídka na Jezerní slať provides an unmissable opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique environment of a high-altitude peat bog. Located near Kvilda in the heart of the Šumava National Park, the Jezerní slať (Lake Moor) is one of the largest peat bogs in the Czech Republic, covering approximately 190 hectares. The average depth of the peat is 2.5 meters, but in some areas, it reaches over 7 meters. A wooden boardwalk trail leads through the bog, providing safe passage and minimizing disturbance to the fragile ecosystem. Informational panels along the trail detail the bog's formation, unique flora, and fauna. Keep an eye out for cold-loving plant species like tussock cottongrass and dwarf birch. The area is also home to various animal species, including the common viper and viviparous lizard. The highlight of the visit is the two-story observation tower. From the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the vast peat bog stretching out before you, as well as the surrounding forests and the peak of Antýgl mountain. The tower provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the scale and beauty of this remarkable landscape. Jezerní slať is known as one of the coldest places in the Czech Republic, with an average annual temperature of just 2°C. In winter, temperatures can plummet below -30°C. The lowest recorded temperature was -41.6°C. The area was declared a protected reserve in 1933. The original observation tower was constructed in 1974 but was replaced with the current structure in 1997.
