Discover more about James Farm Ecological Preserve

The James Farm Ecological Preserve is a 150-acre gem on the Indian River Bay, a short drive from Bethany Beach, Delaware. It offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a variety of natural habitats. The preserve features over three miles of marked hiking trails that wind through seven distinct ecosystems, including salt marshes, maritime forests, and former farm fields. The land was donated to Sussex County in 1992 by Mary Lighthipe, a descendant of the James family, who farmed the land for generations. Her gift, in memory of her son Harold, stipulated that the property be used for environmental education and recreation. Since 1998, the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays has managed the preserve, enhancing it with features like observation platforms, a boardwalk beach crossing, and a freshwater wetland area. Visitors can explore the sandy beach at low tide, walk through the shrubby high marsh, or find shade in the loblolly pine and hardwood forests. The preserve is a haven for birdwatchers, especially during spring and fall migrations. The diverse habitats attract a wide array of bird species, and the preserve is a designated site on the Delaware Birding Trail. Keep an eye out for deer, ducks, reptiles, and amphibians in the freshwater wetland area. The James Farm Master Plan, initiated in 2014, focuses on balancing increased visitation with ecosystem protection. Recent improvements include a new parking lot entrance, expanded parking, and a multi-purpose event lawn. Future plans include a three-season education building to enhance environmental education programs.
