Located on Al-Muizz Street in the historic district of Cairo, the Sabil-Kuttab of Abdel Rahman Katkhuda is a significant monument dating back to 1744 AD. Commissioned by Abdel Rahman Katkhuda, a Mamluk amir, the building served as both a public fountain (sabil) offering free, fresh water to passersby and an elementary Quran school (kuttab) for children. The building's design reflects a blend of Mamluk and Ottoman architectural styles. Its three free-standing sides maximize visibility on Al-Muizz Street. The southern part of the structure consists of two stories, housing the sabil on the ground floor and the kuttab above. The building features grey and white stones inlaid with marble reliefs and Ottoman tiles with floral motifs. The entrance includes Quranic verses and a square space with the names of the 'sleepers of the cave'. The kuttab on the second floor has five marbled columns supporting a painted roof and mashrabeya windows, a characteristic feature of Islamic Cairo architecture. Today, the Sabil-Kuttab stands as a reminder of the architectural and cultural heritage of Islamic Cairo, representing a time when even utilitarian structures like sabils were designed as works of art.
