Discover more about Mosque of Sultan Al-Ashraf Barsbay

The Mosque of Sultan Al-Ashraf Barsbay is a historical complex comprising a mosque-madrasa, mausoleum, and Sufi lodgings, constructed during the Mamluk period by Sultan Al-Ashraf Al-Barsbay. Built in 1424 AD, the mosque is located on Al Moez Ldin Allah Al Fatmi street, in the heart of Islamic Cairo. Sultan Al-Ashraf Barsbay, who ruled the Mamluk Empire, commissioned the mosque. He is known for his monopolistic trade policies and military campaigns. The mosque complex reflects the architecture of the time, incorporating marble and stained-glass windows. The mosque also maintains a regional identity due to the nature of the building craft and relative immobility of builders compared with other craftsmen. The mosque follows a cruciform plan with four iwans surrounding a central courtyard. The interior features marble mosaic pavements, a center aisle with raised iwans on both sides, arcades with classical capitals, and two rows of windows. The minbar is decorated, while the mihrab is less ornamented. The tomb chamber, located on the north side of the mosque, is lit by colored glass windows. Barsbay's cenotaph, made of marble, is in front of the mihrab. Today, Al Moez Street, where the mosque is located, is considered an open-air museum, showcasing over 1,000 years of Islamic architecture and culture.
