History of Central Eritrea

Central Eritrea has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of early human settlements dating back thousands of years. The region was part of the Kingdom of D’mt in the 8th century BC, which was known for its advanced architecture and iron smelting techniques. Later, it became part of the Aksumite Empire, a powerful trading empire that thrived between the 1st and 7th centuries AD. The Aksumites were known for their monumental obelisks and the introduction of Christianity in the region.
In the late 19th century, Eritrea became a colony of Italy. The Italians developed significant infrastructure, including the Eritrean Railway, which connected the highlands of Central Eritrea to the port city of Massawa.
