History of Seraye

Seraye, located in the southern highlands of Eritrea, was once part of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, one of the great civilizations of the ancient world. The Aksumite Empire, which flourished from approximately 100 AD to 940 AD, was known for its impressive architecture, including towering obelisks and intricate stone churches. Seraye's strategic location made it an important region for trade and cultural exchange within the Aksumite Empire.
During the medieval period, Seraye witnessed the rise of Islamic influence as traders and settlers from the Arabian Peninsula and the wider Muslim world arrived. By the 15th century, Seraye became part of the Kingdom of Medri Bahri, a powerful Christian kingdom that played a crucial role in the region's history. The influence of both Christianity and Islam can still be seen in the cultural practices and religious architecture of the area.
In the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire expanded its reach into the Red Sea region, including parts of modern-day Eritrea.
