History of Läänemaa

Läänemaa, also known as Lääne County, boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. Archaeological evidence indicates that the area was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period. During the Viking Age, Läänemaa was a significant region for trade and maritime activities. The coastal waters of Läänemaa were frequented by Viking ships, and the area served as a crucial link in the network of trade routes connecting Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea, and beyond.
In the 13th century, Läänemaa became part of the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek, an ecclesiastical state within the Livonian Confederation.
