History of Space Coast

Long before European settlers arrived, the Space Coast was home to indigenous tribes such as the Ais and the Timucua. These tribes thrived in the region's abundant natural resources, including the Indian River Lagoon, which provided fish and other sustenance. Archaeological sites, such as the Windover Archaeological Site, have revealed significant insights into the lives of these early inhabitants.
In the early 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived on the east coast of Florida. Among the first was Juan Ponce de León, who is believed to have explored the area in 1513. The Spanish influence is evident in place names and local history, marking the beginning of European interaction with the region.
In the mid-1800s, the U.S. government established Fort Capron near present-day Fort Pierce to protect settlers from Seminole attacks.
