Discover more about Place des Cardeurs

Place des Cardeurs, or Carders' Square, is a bustling plaza located in the heart of Aix-en-Provence. The square's name comes from the carders who once processed wool in the area, reflecting the city's textile heritage. Despite its seemingly old-world charm, the Place des Cardeurs was created in 1963 after the demolition of an insalubrious housing block, which once formed the Jewish quarter of Aix during the Middle Ages. Today, Place des Cardeurs is a vibrant hub, lined with numerous cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. The square is a popular meeting place, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the Aixois lifestyle. The Fontaine des Cardeurs, a modern fountain created in 1977 by Jean Amado, adds a contemporary touch to the historically rich setting. The square provides a blend of old and new, making it a must-visit destination in Aix-en-Provence.
