The Stiftskirche, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the apostles Peter and Paul, stands on the Florentinerberg hill, overlooking Baden-Baden's Altstadt (Old Town). Its story began in 987, marking it as the city's oldest continuously used building.Originally a Romanesque church, it was expanded in the late Gothic style between 1453 and 1474. The 68-meter-high tower, a defining feature of Baden-Baden's skyline, received its Baroque, onion-shaped dome after the city fire of 1689. The church's architecture reflects Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque in a trilateral style.From 1391 to 1793, the choir area served as the burial site for the Margraves of Baden. Inside, highlights include a sandstone cross carved by Niclaus Gerhaert van Leyden in 1467 and a filigree, 13-meter-high sacrament house from around 1490. The interior houses remarkable sacred works of art. The epitaph of Ludwig Wilhelm, Margrave of Baden-Baden, also known as 'Türkenlouis', is another striking feature of the church.The Stiftskirche is part of the Baden-Baden pastoral care unit within the Archdiocese of Freiburg.
