The Sculpted Rocks of Rothéneuf, located a few kilometers from Saint-Malo, represent a remarkable example of Art Brut, born from the vision and dedication of Abbé Adolphe Julien Fouré. In 1894, after suffering a stroke that left him deaf and mute, Abbé Fouré retired to Rothéneuf and began transforming the coastal cliffs into his personal open-air gallery. For over 14 years, armed with simple tools, Abbé Fouré tirelessly carved more than 300 figures into the granite rocks, covering an area of approximately 500 square meters. His sculptures depict a diverse range of subjects, including characters from the Rothéneuf family legend, local historical figures like Jacques Cartier, religious icons, and scenes inspired by contemporary events such as the Transvaal War. The sculptures reflect Abbé Fouré's unique perspective and his fascination with both local history and global affairs. The Rochers Sculptés are exposed to the elements, and the ever-present sea air and tides continue to shape and erode the sculptures, adding an element of constant evolution to the artwork. Visitors can explore the site, discovering the faces, creatures, and stories etched into the stone, while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery. The site is open to visitors year-round, with varying seasonal hours. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the terrain can be uneven and steep.
