Sokhumi Botanical Garden: A Green Oasis
Discover a diverse collection of flora at one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Caucasus, a peaceful escape in the heart of Sokhumi.
The Sokhumi Botanical Garden, located in the city of Sokhumi, Abkhazia, is a serene testament to the region's rich botanical history. Founded in 1840 by Nikolay Raevsky, head of the Russian Black Sea fortification line, as the Sukhum-Kale Military-Botanical Garden, its initial purpose was to introduce new plants, particularly tea and citrus fruits, to the area. Throughout its history, the garden faced significant challenges, including damage during the Russo-Turkish wars in 1853-55 and 1877-78. Transferred to civil authorities in 1889, restoration efforts began in 1894, and the garden continued to flourish during the Soviet era, evolving into a research institute of botany. The Georgian-Abkhazian War (1992–1993) also greatly impacted the garden. Today, the garden spans approximately 30 hectares and features over 4,500 plant species, including 1,200 tropical varieties. Visitors can explore distinct sections dedicated to flora, introduction, floriculture, dendrology, and plant protection. Highlights include a Caucasian Linden tree estimated to be over 350 years old and diverse collections of exotic shrubs and flowers. The garden provides a peaceful retreat with hiking trails, recreation areas, and ponds.
