Discover more about Fortress of Ksani

Ksani Fortress, or Mtkvari Fortress, is a medieval castle located near the village of Dzegvi in the Mtskheta Municipality. Perched on Mount Sarkineti, it overlooks the meeting point of the Ksani and Mtkvari rivers. The fortress controlled an important trade route and witnessed numerous battles. Constructed in the 16th century by Prince Bagrat of Mukhrani, the fortress was initially built to defend against internal conflicts within the Georgian royal family. The fortress saw heavy damage by the 18th century. Konstantine Mukhranbatoni, a descendent of Bagrat, rebuilt the fortress in 1746, naming it Konstantinbati. The rebuilt fortress consists of walls and four towers of varying shapes and sizes. These towers served military and residential purposes, housing the garrison and storing supplies. Today, Ksani Fortress is partially ruined but remains an impressive historical site. Visitors can explore the walls, towers, and the remains of a water reservoir and wine cellar. The fortress offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Ksani Fortress is recognized as an Immovable Cultural Monument of National Significance in Georgia.
