Discover more about House of World Cultures

The House of World Cultures (HKW) stands as a prominent center for cultural exchange in Berlin, situated in the Tiergarten on the south bank of the Spree. Established in 1989, the HKW occupies the former Congress Hall, a building with a rich history and striking architecture. The building itself was a gift from the United States to West Berlin during the International Building Exhibition in 1957 and was designed by architect Hugh Stubbins. Its unique, curved roof led locals to nickname it the "Pregnant Oyster". A quote from Benjamin Franklin on a marble wall behind the main entrance symbolizes freedom and democracy. The HKW serves as a forum for contemporary art and critical debate, showcasing artistic productions from around the world, particularly those of non-European cultures. Visual arts, music, literature, performing arts, film, and digital media converge in an interdisciplinary program. The HKW's mission is to explore strategies for a better coexistence of all cultures, addressing social and artistic themes through exhibitions, concerts, performances, and discussions. In front of the building, a large water basin features the bronze sculpture "Large Divided Oval: Butterfly" by Henry Moore, installed in 1987. The HKW also provides barrier-free access and services for visitors with disabilities. It is easily accessible by public transportation, with the U5 U-Bahn line and the 100 bus line stopping nearby.
