Discover more about Roman Forum of Athens (Roman Agora)

The Roman Forum of Athens, also known as the Roman Agora, offers a captivating glimpse into the city's Roman past. Built between 19-11 BC with funding from Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, it served as the commercial and administrative center of Athens during the Roman period, replacing the Ancient Agora as the city's main marketplace. Located north of the Acropolis, the Roman Agora connected to the Ancient Agora via a paved road. The forum was designed as a large, open-air courtyard surrounded by colonnades, shops, and public buildings. Today, visitors can explore the remains of this once-bustling center, including the Gate of Athena Archegetis, the Eastern Propylon, and the public toilets. The Tower of the Winds, an octagonal clocktower dating back to the 1st century BC, is one of the most impressive and well-preserved structures within the Roman Agora. Designed by Syrian astronomer Andronikos of Kyrrhos, it functioned as a compass, sundial, weather vane, and water clock. Each side of the tower features a relief depicting one of the eight Greek wind deities. Over the centuries, the Roman Agora underwent several transformations, with Byzantine churches and Ottoman structures, such as the Fethiye Mosque, built atop its ruins. A visit to the Roman Agora provides a unique opportunity to witness the layers of history that have shaped Athens into the vibrant city it is today.
