Discover more about Athens National Garden

The National Garden, a 15.8-hectare green space in the heart of Athens, offers a serene escape from the city's vibrant energy. Originally commissioned as the Royal Garden by Queen Amalia in 1838, it was completed in 1840 by German agronomist Friedrich Schmidt, who sourced over 500 plant species from around the globe. The garden's design reflects 19th-century English landscape architecture, featuring winding paths, open vistas, and diverse vegetation. Discover over 7,000 trees, 40,000 shrubs, and 519 plant species, including both native Greek varieties and exotic imports. Admire the towering Washingtonia palm trees planted by Queen Amalia herself. Explore the garden's hidden treasures, such as the Roman villa mosaic floor, a relic of ancient Athens. Visit the small zoo, botanical museum, and children's library. Relax by the duck pond or admire the sundial, a traditional time-telling device. The Peisistratus aqueduct, rediscovered in 1860, still irrigates the garden. In 1927, the garden was renamed the National Garden and opened to the public. Today, it remains a beloved green space for Athenians and visitors alike, offering a tranquil retreat in the city center.
