Discover more about Roman Forum of Athens (Roman Agora)

The Roman Forum of Athens, also known as the Roman Agora, offers a captivating glimpse into the city's Roman past. Constructed between 19-11 BC, with funding from Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, it served as the commercial and administrative center of Roman Athens, replacing the Ancient Agora in importance. Stroll through the ruins and imagine the bustling marketplace that once thrived here. The forum was designed as a large, open-air courtyard surrounded by colonnades, shops, and public buildings. The remains of the Gate of Athena Archegetis, the monumental western entrance, still stand, featuring four Doric columns made of Pentelic marble. One of the most remarkable structures within the Roman Agora is the Tower of the Winds, an octagonal tower dating back to the 1st century BC. Designed by the astronomer Andronikos of Kyrrhos, it functioned as a compass, sundial, weather vane, and water clock. Each side of the tower is adorned with a relief depicting one of the eight winds of Greek mythology. Other notable remains include the Eastern Propylon, public latrines, and the Fethiye Mosque, a reminder of the Ottoman period. The Roman Agora provides a tangible link to Athens' rich and layered history, showcasing the influence of Roman culture on this ancient city.
