Neratze Mosque: A Testament to Rethymno's Diverse History

The Neratze Mosque, located on Titos Petychakis Square in the heart of Rethymno's old town, encapsulates the city's rich and complex history. Initially constructed by the Venetians as the Catholic Church of Santa Maria of the Augustinians in the late 16th century, it served as a monastery, a place for contemplation and religious devotion. Following the Ottoman conquest of Rethymno in 1646, the church was transformed into a mosque in 1657 by Gazi Hussein Pasha. The conversion involved architectural modifications, including the addition of three semi-circular domes replacing the original tiled roof and the removal of Christian symbols. The building was renamed Gazi Housein or Neratze Mosque and also served as an Ottoman seminary. In 1890, a towering minaret with two stone balconies was added, reaching a height of 33 meters. The minaret was intended to be the most majestic in the East.When Crete gained independence from Turkish rule, the mosque was briefly reconverted into a Greek Orthodox church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos. Since 1957, the building has been repurposed as the Municipal Odeon, a conservatory that serves as a vibrant cultural center hosting art shows, exhibitions, and musical performances. The building's architecture reflects a blend of Renaissance and Ottoman influences. The doorway of the entrance is a unique example of Renaissance architecture. Today, the Neratze Mosque stands as a monument to Rethymno's diverse cultural heritage, bearing witness to the city's Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek past.
