Discover more about Kenouryia Porta

Kenouryia Porta, also known as the Gate of Jesus or New Gate, stands as a striking testament to Heraklion's Venetian past. Constructed in 1587 on the south side of the Venetian Walls, this imposing gate once served as a key entrance to the city. Those heading to the southern provinces would pass through this gate. The gate's design showcases the Renaissance architecture of the Venetian era. The inner façade is particularly notable, featuring carved stones arranged in vertical symmetry. Openings on either side of the central doorway once led to stairs, windows, and secondary entrances, providing access to rooms used for storing weapons and housing the gate's guards. The exterior façade, in contrast, was simpler, adorned with five coats of arms. Today, Kenouryia Porta is a popular tourist attraction, inviting visitors to step back in time and appreciate its architectural details. The surrounding area is filled with local cafes and shops, perfect for soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Heraklion.
