Discover more about Ancient City of Lato

The ancient city of Lato, located 3 km north of Kritsa in eastern Crete, offers a captivating journey into the island's Dorian past. Founded in the 7th century BC and flourishing through the Hellenistic period, Lato was strategically built on a saddle between two hills, providing natural defenses and panoramic views of Mirabello Bay. Named after Leto (Λατώ), the Dorian form of the goddess Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis, the city was a prominent power in ancient Crete. Lato's prosperity is evident in its well-preserved ruins, which include a fortified city, a central marketplace (agora), temples, a Prytaneion (administrative center), a small theater, and cisterns. The city's main gate, complete with defensive towers, leads to a stepped roadway ascending to the agora, once lined with shops and workshops. As you explore the site, imagine the bustling life of this ancient city, where citizens gathered in the agora, leaders met in the Prytaneion, and religious ceremonies took place in the temples. The remains of houses, workshops, and public buildings offer a tangible connection to the daily lives of Lato's inhabitants. The city's strategic importance is further highlighted by its strong walls, towers, and acropolises. Lato was destroyed around 200 BC, but its port city of Kamara (present-day Agios Nikolaos) continued to thrive, eventually becoming the administrative center. Today, Lato stands as one of the best-preserved cities from the Classical and Hellenistic periods in Crete, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the grandeur of ancient Dorian civilization.
