Bus
From Heraklion, head to the central bus station located on 1866 Street. Look for a bus heading towards Rethymnon or Arkalochori, as these routes will take you close to Ancient Eleutherna. The journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Get off at the stop for 'Archea Eleftherna' or 'Ancient Eleutherna,' which is well-signposted. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as buses may not run frequently. Once you arrive at the bus stop, walk towards the entrance of the archaeological site, which is a short walk from the stop.
Walking
If you are staying within a reasonable walking distance in Heraklion, you can take a scenic walk to Ancient Eleutherna. Start from the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and head northwest towards the city outskirts. Follow the signs leading to Rethymnon, as you will be following the general direction of the ancient site. It is approximately a 10 km (6.2 miles) walk, and it may take around 2 hours. Make sure to carry water and wear comfortable shoes, as the route can be hot and sunny. Enjoy the views along the way!
Taxi
For a more direct route, consider taking a taxi from Heraklion to Ancient Eleutherna. You can find taxis at designated taxi stands throughout the city or use a ride-hailing app if available. The taxi ride will take about 25 minutes, depending on traffic, and should cost around 30-40 euros. Ensure you confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey. The taxi will drop you off right at the entrance of the archaeological site.
