Discover more about Ancient Agora of Thasos

The Ancient Agora of Thasos, located in Limenas, was the center of ancient Thassian life. Construction began in the 4th century BC, though earlier structures date back to the 6th century BC. This rectangular space, surrounded by columns, housed temples, monuments, and statues. As the political, administrative, and religious hub of the ancient town, the Agora featured buildings for various uses. The site includes the remains of temples and sanctuaries. In the 1st century AD, a paved street connected the Agora's entrance to the port of Limenas. Administrative buildings, including a rectangular structure known as the prytanio and a Doric building with rulers' names inscribed on a wall, were located on the northern side. Other significant structures included an offering to Athena Propylaea, the cenotaph of Glafkos, sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo with the Nymphs, Hermes with the Three Graces, and a complex of rooms. The Agora suffered destruction in the mid-3rd century BC by the Erules, a tribe from the northern Balkans, and underwent several reconstructions over the centuries. Excavations by the French Archaeological School uncovered the site between 1948 and 1955. Today, the Agora's ruins offer insights into the island's rich history.
