Discover more about Konstantinos Zappas Statue

The Konstantinos Zappas Statue is a prominent landmark in Athens, honoring Konstantinos Zappas (1814–1892), a Greek entrepreneur and national benefactor. Together with his cousin Evangelis Zappas, Konstantinos is remembered for his essential role in the revival of the Olympic Games. The 1.90-meter-high marble statue depicts Konstantinos Zappas in formal clothing, standing upright on a leveled podium. His attire includes a mantle with pleats, medals and a laurel wreath. The statue, created by Georgios Vroutos, was unveiled in 1888. Initially, the statue was located on the staircase of the Zappeion Hall but was moved to its current location flanking the entrance of the mansion in 1924. Konstantinos continued his cousin's legacy after Evangelis' death, managing the Olympic Committee and organizing the Zappas Olympics, a Greek athletic festival that predated the modern international Olympics. He also contributed to building the Zappeion Hall in Athens, which officially opened in 1888. Zappas supported numerous Greek schools and provided scholarships for students to study in Western Europe. The statues of Konstantinos and Evangelis Zappas are situated in front of the Zappeion.
