    From the central bus station (KTEL) in Serres, take the bus towards Ano Vrontou. Inform the driver that you wish to get off at the nearest stop to the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner. The Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner, also known as Timios Prodromos, is located approximately 8 kilometers north of Serres, Greece, in a ravine on Mount Menikion. Founded in 1270 by Saint Ioannikios, it has been a significant spiritual center throughout its history. The monastery showcases remarkable Byzantine architecture and offers visitors a peaceful environment for reflection and exploration. Throughout its history, the monastery has faced numerous challenges. In 1345, Serbian armies partially destroyed it. In 1917 and 1941, Bulgarian raids resulted in the destruction of property, the theft of manuscripts and relics, and the killing of monks. Despite these setbacks, the monastery has been rebuilt and revitalized, becoming a convent in 1986. Restoration efforts continue to this day. The monastery complex includes a main church (katholikon) adorned with frescoes from various periods, reflecting different stylistic trends of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art. The library was once renowned for its vast collection of manuscripts, earning the monastery the name "of the Grammarians".
