Getting There

Driving

From Hagåtña, head south on Route 4. Continue on Route 4 until you see signs for Humåtak. Follow the signs to Fort Soledad, which is located off Soledad Drive. Parking is available near the fort. Be aware that the road to Umatac is a bumpy two-lane road.
Public Transport

From Hagåtña, take a bus operated by the Guam Mass Transit Authority (GMTA) heading south towards Humåtak. The bus ride takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Get off at the nearest bus stop to Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. From there, walk south for a few minutes to reach the fort. A one-way bus fare is $1.00, or you can purchase a day pass for $3.00.

Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, also known as Fort Soledad, is a historical site located near Humåtak on the southwestern coast of Guam. Constructed by the Spanish, likely between 1802 and 1819, it was the last of four fortifications built to protect Umatac Bay, a crucial anchorage for galleons traveling between Acapulco, Mexico, and the Philippines.Standing atop Mount Chalan Ahiti, also known as the 'Path of the Ancestors', the fort offered a commanding view of the bay and the vast Pacific Ocean. Its strategic position allowed the Spanish to monitor and defend against potential threats to their valuable trading route. The fort was armed with seven cannons along a barbeta and included quarters for soldiers.With the end of the Manila galleon trade around 1815 due to the Mexican Revolution, the fort's military significance declined. Over time, it fell into disrepair, and treasure hunters caused further damage. Despite this, the government of Guam recognized its historical importance and transformed it into a public park after World War II.Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Fort Soledad, including remnants of the stone walls and replica cannons.
