Discover more about Lincoln Home

The Lincoln Home National Historic Site, located in Springfield, Illinois, preserves the residence where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family from 1844 to 1861. This Greek Revival house, purchased for $1,200, was the only home Lincoln ever owned. Over the years, the house sheltered Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd, and their children, bearing witness to both joyous occasions and personal tragedies. During his time in this home, Lincoln's career evolved from a local lawyer to a nationally recognized political figure. In 1846, he was elected to the House of Representatives, and in 1860, he received news of his presidential election in the very parlor of this house. The house was expanded in 1856 to accommodate the growing family. Today, the Lincoln Home is carefully restored to its 1860 appearance, offering visitors an intimate view of Lincoln's life as a husband, father, neighbor, and politician. The National Park Service provides free guided tours of the house, allowing visitors to explore the twelve rooms and learn about the Lincoln family's daily life. The surrounding four-block neighborhood is also part of the historic site, featuring restored homes and exhibits that evoke the atmosphere of 19th-century Springfield. Visitors can obtain free tickets for the tour at the Lincoln Home Visitor Center.
