Car
To reach Matthiessen State Park by car, start by getting onto Interstate 55 (I-55) or Interstate 80 (I-80) depending on your location in Northeastern Illinois. If you are near Chicago, take I-55 South towards St. Louis. If you are closer to the western suburbs, you may prefer I-80 West. From I-55, take exit 240A for I-39 North towards Rockford. Continue on I-39 North and take exit 54 for IL-251 towards Oglesby. Follow IL-251 South until you reach the intersection with IL-178. Turn left onto IL-178 and continue for about 5 miles until you arrive at Matthiessen State Park, located at 2500 IL-178, Oglesby, IL 61348. There is no entrance fee for the park.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, take a Metra train from Chicago to the LaSalle/Peru station. This will require taking the Metra Heritage Corridor Line or the BNSF Railway Line. Once you arrive at the LaSalle/Peru station, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to Matthiessen State Park, as public transportation does not directly serve the park. The distance from the station to the park is approximately 10 miles, so expect the taxi fare to be around $20-$30. Alternatively, check for local shuttle services that may operate from the train station to the park, especially during peak tourist seasons.
