Discover more about Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, the first national tallgrass prairie in the U.S., offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Established in 1996 on the site of the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, Midewin represents a large-scale effort to restore nearly 20,000 acres of industrial and agricultural land back to its native tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Visitors can explore over 33 miles of trails, open from 4 am to 10 pm daily, that wind through restored prairies, woodlands, and wetlands. The landscape is dotted with remnants of the former ammunition plant, offering a surreal juxtaposition of nature and history. Keep an eye out for the reintroduced American bison, a key part of the prairie restoration project, grazing in their 1,200-acre pasture. Midewin is a haven for outdoor recreation, with opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian population, including grassland birds. The Welcome Center provides maps, information, and interpretive displays to enhance your visit. Midewin, pronounced 'mih-DAY-win,' is derived from the Potawatomi name for their Grand Medicine Society, reflecting the site's mission of healing the land and providing balance.
