Discover more about Pemayangtse Monastery

Pemayangtse Monastery, located near Pelling in Sikkim, is a significant and historic Buddhist center. Founded in 1705 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, it stands as one of Sikkim's oldest and most important monasteries, belonging to the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery's name, translating to 'Perfect Sublime Lotus,' symbolizes one of the four plexuses of the human body. Originally a small shrine, the monastery expanded in 1705 under Chhogyal Chhagdor Namgyal and Lama Khanchhen Rolpai Dorje. Pemayangtse was built for 'pure monks' (ta-tshang), celibate and without physical abnormality, a practice still honored today. Only monks of Pemayangtse hold the 'ta-tshang' title. The head lama once held the unique privilege of anointing Sikkim's Chogyals (monarchs). The three-story structure showcases traditional Tibetan architecture with vibrant murals, intricate wood carvings, and statues of saints and Rinpoches. The main prayer hall features a statue of Padmasambhava in his wrathful form as Dorje Bhurpa Vjarakila. The top floor houses the Zangdok Palri, a seven-tiered wooden structure representing Guru Rinpoche's heavenly abode. Over the centuries, the monastery has undergone several renovations to preserve its cultural and architectural integrity, notably after earthquake damage in 1913 and 1960. Located at an elevation of 2,085 meters (6,840 feet), Pemayangtse Monastery offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range. The serene environment amidst the woods provides a meditative retreat. Visitors can explore the ancient scriptures, artifacts, and the well-maintained gardens within the compound. The annual 'Cham' dance festival is a vibrant display of culture, with monks performing story dances in traditional attire.
