Getting There

  • Driving

    Terrace Hill is located at 2300 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. From I-235, take exit 8B for 42nd Street N. Continue on 42nd Street and turn left onto Grand Avenue. The Terrace Hill Historic Site will be on your left. Free parking is available in the Terrace Hill parking lot at the corner of Forest Drive and Grand Avenue, as well as free on-street parking surrounding Terrace Hill. Limited handicapped parking is available on Forest Drive.

  • Public Transport

    The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) provides bus service to Terrace Hill. From the Greyhound station, take Bus Route 3 (Ingersoll) or Route 60 (Hickman) towards downtown. Get off at the stop at 42nd St. and Grand Ave. From there, it's a short walk (about 0.5 miles) west along Grand Ave to reach Terrace Hill Historic Site. A single ride on DART costs $1.75.

  • Walking

    Terrace Hill is located west of downtown Des Moines. From the Iowa State Capitol, head west on Grand Avenue for approximately 1.5 miles. Terrace Hill will be on your right. The entrance is at the pedestrian gate located near the flag pavilion on Forest Drive.

Terrace Hill, located in Des Moines, stands as a testament to Iowa's rich history and architectural grandeur. Completed in 1869, this stunning Victorian Second Empire mansion serves as both the official residence of the Governor of Iowa and a National Historic Landmark. The house was built by Benjamin Franklin Allen, Des Moines' first millionaire, who hired Chicago architect William W. Boyington to bring his vision to life. Terrace Hill boasts 18,000 square feet of living space and sits on eight acres of meticulously maintained grounds. Its design features include a steeply pitched mansard roof, open verandas, and a commanding 90-foot tower that offers panoramic views of Des Moines. Inside, visitors can admire the brilliantly colored stained glass window and marvelous woodwork. Today, Terrace Hill welcomes nearly ten thousand visitors each year. Guided tours, available from March through December, lead guests through the first and second floors, which function as a public museum and event space. The tour begins with an introductory video in the Carriage House, followed by a tour of the residence. The third floor serves as the private living quarters for the Governor and their family and is not open to the public. Terrace Hill has a gift shop that is open during touring hours. The Terrace Hill Partnership also hosts events such as Victorian dinners and Mother's Day teas.
