Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area: Celebrating American Agriculture
Explore America's agricultural heritage in Northeast Iowa: farms, museums, and scenic byways await!
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) tells the story of American agriculture and its global significance. Designated as a National Heritage Area in 1996, it recognizes the importance of both the farms (silos) and industries (smokestacks) that constitute agribusiness. Covering the northeast third of Iowa, SSNHA includes 37 counties with a rich variety of resources beyond the city limits of Waterloo. The area showcases the evolution of American agriculture, from early farming practices to the industrialized development that feeds the world. The landscape includes rolling hills, river valleys, and fertile lands shaped by centuries of agriculture. Visitors can explore more than 90 sites, including dairy farms, museums, vineyards, and tractor assembly plants. These sites offer hands-on experiences and educational programs that highlight the innovations and traditions of farming in America. The heritage area also includes scenic byways and the Great River Road, providing opportunities to appreciate the beauty of the Iowa countryside. SSNHA partners with various organizations to preserve and promote the region's agricultural heritage. These partnerships support educational programs, exhibits, and community events that engage visitors and celebrate the land, people, and communities of Northeast Iowa.
