Discover more about Terrace Hill Historic Site

Terrace Hill, perched atop the highest point in Des Moines, is more than just the Iowa Governor's Residence; it's a journey back in time. Completed in 1869 for Iowa's first millionaire, Benjamin Franklin Allen, this 18,000-square-foot mansion is an exquisite example of Victorian Second Empire architecture. Designed by Chicago architect William W. Boyington, the home boasted modern amenities for its time, including hot and cold running water and gas lights. Allen's occupancy was brief, and the home later became the residence of Frederick Hubbell and his descendants for over 70 years. In 1971, the Hubbell family donated Terrace Hill to the State of Iowa, and in 1976, it became the official governor's residence. Today, Terrace Hill serves a dual purpose: the private apartment on the third floor is home to the current governor and their family, while the first and second floors are open to the public as a museum and event space. Visitors can explore the elegant rooms, filled with period furnishings, artwork, and a brilliantly colored stained-glass window. Knowledgeable guides lead tours, sharing fascinating stories about the mansion's construction, its role in Iowa's political history, and the lives of those who resided within its walls. The eight acres of historic grounds offer a picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll, with vibrant gardens that bloom with seasonal flowers. Terrace Hill is an accessible facility with an elevator available. Guided tours are available by reservation only, Tuesday through Saturday, from March through December.
