Discover more about Donegal Railway Heritage Museum (Centre)

The Donegal Railway Heritage Museum, situated in the Old Station House on Tyrconnell Street in Donegal Town, is an award-winning visitor attraction that commemorates the railways that operated across County Donegal from 1863 to 1959. Donegal had the largest narrow-gauge railway network in the British Isles. The museum is located just 300 meters from Donegal Town Centre. The museum boasts a wide array of exhibits, including the restored Donegal steam engine “Drumboe” built in 1907, carriages and wagons, audio and visual displays, and working railway models. Visitors can also enjoy Ireland's first full-size interactive railway cab and a ride-on Thomas the Tank Engine (weather permitting). The museum also features historical artifacts, a reference library, and a shop. The County Donegal Railway Restoration Society restored the center, which opened in 1995. The museum tells the story of the County Donegal Railways Committee, which operated two narrow-gauge railways in County Donegal. The narrow-gauge tracks allowed trains to travel through the region's challenging landscapes. Highlights of the museum include the Class 5 Locomotive, “Drumboe”, built in 1907, and Restored Series 2 Carriage #28 from 1893. The museum also owns Railcar #15, built in 1936, and Trailer #5, built in 1929, both undergoing restoration.
