Discover more about The Royal Hospital Kilmainham

The Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK), an iconic landmark in Dublin, was established in 1680 by royal command. It predates the Royal Hospital Chelsea by two years and is based on Les Invalides in Paris. This impressive structure is Ireland's oldest classical building. Originally designed as a home for retired soldiers, the RHK served this purpose for nearly 250 years. In 1690, it began caring for army pensioners from the Battle of the Boyne. Although designed to house 400, it initially accommodated only 20, but at times housed up to 2,500. In 1922, the RHK was handed over to the Irish Free State. It functioned as Garda Headquarters from 1930 to 1950 but later fell into disrepair. Extensive renovations in the 1980s paved the way for its new role. Since 1991, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham has been home to the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). The RHK has also served as a filming location for movies and TV shows, including The Madman and the Professor, The Tudors, and Penny Dreadful. Today, it hosts events like weddings, conferences, and exhibitions. The site features gardens, a bookshop, a café, and parking.
