Discover more about Lackagh Museum & Heritage Centre

The Lackagh Museum & Heritage Centre offers visitors a unique window into Ireland's rural past. Housed in a beautifully restored traditional Irish cottage dating back to the mid-1800s, the museum provides an immersive experience of life in the Lackagh village and surrounding area. The cottage itself was abandoned in the 1970s and had fallen into ruin before being lovingly restored by the Lackagh Museum and Community Development Association. Inside, you'll discover a collection of over 600 household items donated by the local community, including dressers filled with crockery, butter churns, sewing machines, and settle beds. These artifacts offer a tangible connection to the daily lives of past generations. The museum also features an impressive display of vintage horse-drawn farm machinery and implements, illustrating the agricultural practices of the time. In addition to the cottage and farm displays, the museum includes the Knockdoe Room, which tells the story of the Battle of Knockdoe, a significant historical event that took place nearby in 1504. This battle was fought between the Burkes of Mayo and the Earl of Kildare. The museum also hosts a Digital Hub with remote working facilities. The museum is actively involved in community development, offering adult education courses and overseeing the Lackagh Parish Centre.
