Discover more about Our Lady of Grace Sanctuary

Located just outside Carrara's Renaissance walls, along the route of the ancient Via Carriona, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace hides, behind its modern façade, a richly decorated interior steeped in history. The sanctuary stands as a beacon of faith and serenity in the heart of Carrara. The building was consecrated in 1676, based on a design by architect Alessandro Bergamini. The intent was to shelter a venerated Marian image, preserved in a dilapidated oratory located on the Groppoli site. The interior is a triumph of colorful and rare marbles. Not only the more classic local varieties and Versilian breccias, but a veritable assortment of marbles, both Italian and foreign. The detached 16th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child constitutes the devotional and visual culmination of the sanctuary. The side portals and the tribunes recall the structure of the altar, going to form a unified and majestic whole. The church's interior is decorated in the Baroque-Rococo style, with compositions that bestow an impressive sense of movement to the space thanks to the use of columns, paintings and polychrome marble. The square in front of the sanctuary has a modern appearance, with the monument to St. Francis, the linear facade and the bronze portal. As you explore the sanctuary, take time to appreciate the craftsmanship of the surrounding sculptures, which are a testament to Carrara's renowned marble industry. The peaceful gardens and courtyards also provide a lovely spot to relax and soak in the beauty of this spiritual haven.
