Discover more about Castelnuovo Magra Castle

Perched on a small hill in Castelnuovo Magra, the Castelnuovo Magra Castle offers a glimpse into the region's rich medieval past. Originally constructed in the 12th century by Bishop Walter, the castle was later completed in the 13th century by Enrico da Fucecchio, becoming the capital of the Bishop of Luni's domain. Its strategic location provided a commanding view of the Tyrrhenian coast and the Vara Valley. Throughout its history, the castle has seen numerous changes and additions. In the 15th century, under Medici rule, the palace was restored, and in the 16th century, a circular tower was added for ammunition storage. Despite falling into disuse and being partially dismantled for local construction, the castle retains significant remnants of its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including the large ancient walls, masonry sections of the original castle, and the imposing rectangular tower. Since 2015, the *turris magna* (great tower) has been open to the public for exhibitions and tours. The castle also holds historical significance as the site where Dante Alighieri signed a peace treaty in 1306 between the Malaspina family and Bishop Antonio Da Camilla.
