The Masso Leopoldino, or Rocca Vecchia (Old Fortress), is one of Sorano's most iconic landmarks, embodying the seamless integration of nature and architecture. Rising prominently in the heart of the historic center, this formidable structure was strategically utilized for its defensive capabilities as early as the Middle Ages. The fortress stands on a rock promontory of tufa stone, characteristic of the region, with the town built around its base. Originally a medieval stronghold, the site was likely fortified with defensive structures before the 9th century. Throughout the Middle Ages, it served as a fortified citadel, safeguarding the village below, a function reflected in its name, Rocca Vecchia. The fortress originally included the Clock Tower, used both as a watchtower and a refuge for the population during sieges. Over time, the construction of the nearby Fortezza Orsini diminished its importance. A church, Santa Caterina, was built within the complex between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, first documented in 1565. In 1801, a catastrophic event struck when massive blocks of tufa broke away from the Masso, devastating part of the town and destroying the church of Santa Caterina. Between 1820 and 1822, Grand Duke Ferdinando III of Lorraine initiated consolidation and restoration efforts, constructing a large retaining wall to support the eastern slope and smoothing the rock faces to prevent further detachments. The work was completed by Grand Duke Leopoldo II, after whom the Masso Leopoldino is named. The area where the church once stood was transformed into a panoramic terrace. Today, the Masso Leopoldino offers visitors a stunning vantage point, showcasing the village, the surrounding cliffs, and the Lente valley.
