Discover more about Castello Di Campo Ligure

Perched atop a hill overlooking the village of Campo Ligure and the Stura Valley, the Castello di Campo Ligure is a striking example of medieval military architecture. Originally constructed in the 13th century by the Del Bosco family, the castle was later acquired and fortified by the Spinola family in 1310. Its strategic location controlled access through the Stura valley. The castle features a central hexagonal structure dating back to the 12th-13th centuries and a tower that was likely rebuilt on the foundations of an older medieval tower. The 28-meter tall stone fortress includes three cylindrical towers with specialized fire openings. Underground passages once connected the castle to the village. Over the centuries, the castle has been the site of numerous battles and sieges. In 1329, Emperor Louis the Bavarian invested Anfreone Spinola with the castle. The Spinola family used the castle as a temporary residence to better control the surrounding valley and its communication routes. After falling into disrepair in the 18th century, the castle was abandoned by the Spinola family. In the 1990s, the municipality acquired the castle from a private owner and began restoration work. Today, visitors can explore the restored sections of the castle, including the 'Neviera,' an ancient structure used for food preservation with snow. The castle also hosts events, including a Celtic music festival that has been held for over 20 years.
